A Jagannath University student has alleged he was held for 26 hours and mentally harassed at the Detective Branch (DB) office following a bottle-throwing incident involving Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam.

Ishtiak Hossain, a student from Jagannath University (JnU), claimed on Friday night that he was unlawfully detained and psychologically pressured at the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) office. The detention followed an incident on Wednesday night, where a plastic water bottle reportedly struck Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam during a student protest in front of Kakrail Mosque.

According to Ishtiak, he was picked up from his residence around 4:30 PM on Thursday and taken to the DB office without immediate notification to his family. His relatives were informed about the arrest the following day, Friday, at 2:00 PM.

“I was kept there for 26 hours—from Thursday afternoon until Friday 6:40 PM,” Ishtiak told reporters. “They subjected me to mental torture by asking countless questions late into the night and tried to keep me awake continuously. At one point, they attempted to place me in custody with other accused persons.”

He also claimed to have received threatening calls from various phone numbers warning of mob attacks and personal harm if he left his house. “I was scared, and honestly, I still am,” he added.

The controversy began when students chanted “false, false” slogans during Mahfuz Alam’s attempt to speak with them amid ongoing protests at Jagannath University. The thrown bottle, allegedly by Ishtiak, hit the adviser on the head. The moment went viral on social media shortly after the incident, intensifying public scrutiny.

DB police later released Ishtiak after questioning and handed him over to his family. Human rights activists have since raised concerns over the handling of the incident and called for an investigation into the alleged mistreatment.
