A student was stabbed to death following a Facebook ‘Haha’ reaction. The incident occurred on Saturday morning at Nayabil Bazaar in Nalitabari, Sherpur.
The accused, 18-year-old Sabuj Mia, was apprehended by locals and handed over to the police. Sabuj, from the village of Andharupara in Nayabil Union, works at a garment factory in Gazipur.
The victim, 18-year-old Naeem Islam, was a first-year student at Government Nazmul Smriti College in Nalitabari. He was the son of Mohammad Ismail Hossain from Nayabil Bazaar.
According to police and local sources, about a month ago, Sabuj posted a picture on his Facebook account, to which Naeem had reacted with a ‘Haha’ emoji. This led to a dispute between the two over the phone, during which Sabuj threatened to confront Naeem. Two days ago, Sabuj returned home for Eid and called Naeem to meet at Nayabil Bazaar.
At around 11 a.m. today, Sabuj summoned Naeem to the rear of Agrani Bank in Nayabil Bazaar. After a brief argument, Sabuj attacked Naeem with a knife, stabbing him in the chest. Naeem collapsed to the ground.
Locals and relatives rushed Naeem to the Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds at 1:30 p.m.
After the incident, locals detained Sabuj and handed him over to the police.
Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that Nalitabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Md. Sohel Rana confirmed the murder, stating that it was triggered by the Facebook ‘Haha’ reaction. He added that the body would be handed over to the family after an autopsy at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Legal proceedings are underway, and Sabuj has been taken into custody.
