The body of a student was found floating in the Shah Azizur Rahman Hall pond at Islamic University (IU) on Thursday evening.
The body was recovered around 6:30PM, in the presence of university security and law enforcement personnel.
Classmates identified the deceased as Sajid Abdullah, a student from the 2021-22 session of the Al-Quran and Islamic Studies department. Sajid, who resided in room 109 of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, was from Ghatail Upazila in Tangail district.
Akmal Hossain, the owner of a shop near the pond, recounted, “Around noon, I noticed something elevated in the water, which looked like floating pants. Later, around Asr’ prayer time, I saw a head floating. That’s when people realized what it was, and the news spread.”
Dr Md Shahed, who examined the body, said, “This likely happened four to five hours ago. No pulse was found.”
Mehedi Hasan, the officer-in-charge of IU Police Station, said, “We received a call from the university authorities, and our emergency response team reached the scene. After recovering the body, we sent it to the university medical center to determine if there were any signs of life. The duty doctor then referred him to Kushtia.”
