Over 200 admission seekers from Hatiya upazila in Noakhali district are now facing uncertainty of taking part the National University’s honors first-year admission test, scheduled to be held on Saturday (May 31).
They face the problem as severe weather conditions have forced the suspension of all boat services between Hatiya and the mainland since Tuesday.
This disruption comes just days before the National University’s honors first-year admission test, scheduled to be held nationwide around 11:00 AM on Saturday.
While students from other upazilas can travel to exam centers by road, boat transport remains the only means of travel for Hatiya students. Since early morning, nearly 200 students and their guardians have gathered at Nolchira ghat, braving heavy rain in hopes of crossing to the mainland via Chairman ghat to reach the district headquarters for the exam.
With boat services still suspended due to adverse weather, candidates fear missing the exam could cost them an entire year of their academic progress. They have appealed to the authorities to either postpone the admission test or arrange alternative transportation so they can participate on time.
Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Khondkar Istiaq Ahmed expressed cautious optimism, saying, “This afternoon’s tide was relatively normal, and the rain and wind have decreased significantly.
If conditions remain stable, we expect boat services to resume by this evening or early Saturday morning. Since the exam starts at 11:00 AM, we hope the students will be able to reach their centers on time,” he added.
