Protesting students at Barishal University locked the residence of Vice Chancellor Dr. Shuchita Sharmin on Wednesday, demanding her resignation amid growing unrest and administrative paralysis.
A wave of discontent continues to grip Barishal University as students on Wednesday escalated their movement against Vice Chancellor Dr. Shuchita Sharmin by locking her official residence. The action came after weeks of protests over alleged administrative inefficiency, absentee leadership, and favoritism.
Starting around 11:30 AM, students staged a sit-in and cultural demonstration on the university’s ground floor. Around 2 PM, they marched to the VC’s residence and locked its entrance. Dr. Sharmin was not present at the time. Since May 1, she has reportedly been operating from a guest house in Dhaka, despite University Grants Commission (UGC) restrictions.
In a related development, three faculty members resigned citing “personal reasons.” These include Abdul Alim Bachir, provost of Sher-e-Bangla Hall, Sanjoy Kumar Sarker, director of the Jibanananda Das Research Center, and previously, Associate Professor Mehedi Hasan, provost of Bijoy-24 Hall.
Student leaders claim that Dr. Sharmin’s tenure has disrupted regular university operations due to her delayed file processing and lack of campus presence. “Her leadership contradicts the spirit of the July student movement,” said Ashik Elahi from the Bangla department.
Masum Billah, a student from the Soil and Environmental Sciences department, accused the VC of favoring anti-student elements in administrative appointments while allegedly harassing student supporters. “In seven months of observation, it’s clear that the university cannot progress under her leadership,” he added.
While the Vice Chancellor declined to comment, responding briefly by phone to say she was busy, Acting Proctor Dr. Sonia Khan downplayed the unrest. “Only a handful of students are participating,” she said. “Even after their demands were addressed through the syndicate, some continue the movement for reasons that need scrutiny.”
With administrative functions halted and growing support for the protest, the university faces increasing pressure to resolve the leadership crisis.
