More than 100 civilians have been killed and dozens injured in Sudan’s North Darfur region after brutal attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on refugee camps, local authorities reported Sunday.
In one of the deadliest escalations in the ongoing Sudanese conflict, the RSF launched violent assaults on displacement camps in the North Darfur state. The attack began on Friday at the Zamzam camp, where RSF militias allegedly carried out a ruthless offensive, killing over 100 civilians, according to Ibrahim Khateer, Director General of the state’s health authority.
Another deadly assault occurred on Saturday at the Abu Shouk refugee camp, resulting in at least 14 more deaths and multiple injuries. The violence has left the region in shock, with humanitarian groups raising alarms about the growing civilian toll.
The volunteer organization Emergency Room stated in a press release that heavy shelling by RSF fighters at the Abu Shouk camp claimed the lives of at least 40 civilians, while hundreds more were wounded.
The RSF has not issued an official response regarding the attacks.
Since May 10, 2024, El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has become the epicenter of intense and deadly clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) as well as the RSF. The ongoing civil war has triggered a humanitarian crisis, forcing thousands to flee their homes while aid groups struggle to reach those trapped in conflict zones.
