Bangladesh face Zimbabwe in the opening Test of the series today in Sylhet, as rain looms over all five days of the match, according to forecasts.
The first Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe kicks off today at 10am in Sylhet, with weather predictions indicating potential rainfall throughout the five-day match. Due to a lack of interest from private TV channels, only Bangladesh Television (BTV) will broadcast the game live.
Once considered evenly matched, the gap between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe has widened significantly over the years, causing a drop in audience interest. However, this series carries weight for Bangladesh, now transitioning into a new era of cricket.
Veteran cricketers like Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah Riyad, and Tamim Iqbal have retired, while Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has long been absent from Test cricket. Mushfiqur Rahim is the sole senior player in the squad, though his place is also under scrutiny. With key players like Litton Das and Taskin Ahmed unavailable, the team features a host of young faces.
Under new head coach Phil Simmons, who is emphasizing sporting wickets, Bangladesh will likely field three pacers—Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud, and possibly Tanzim Sakib, who may earn his debut Test cap in place of the injured Taskin. Simmons has stressed the importance of playing on proper, competitive pitches to grow in Test cricket.
While Bangladesh’s bowling unit appears strong, concerns remain over the batting lineup. In the last series against West Indies in November, only Zakir Hasan showed form. Even captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has struggled for runs. Mushfiqur, however, holds an impressive record against Zimbabwe, including two double centuries in his last three Tests.
Zimbabwe, returning to Bangladesh after five years, may pose a challenge. They famously defeated Bangladesh in Sylhet in 2018. Though their recent form is inconsistent, the inclusion of experienced players Craig Ervine and Sean Williams could strengthen their campaign. So far, both teams have met in 18 Tests—Bangladesh winning 8, Zimbabwe 7, and 3 ending in draws.
