BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has held the interim government responsible for what he termed as providing shelter to anarchists, referring to the brutal killing of scrap trader Sohag in Old Dhaka.

Speaking at a programme in Gulshan on Saturday, he said, “A non-issue is being deliberately turned into an issue. Why aren’t the instigators being arrested? Why is the government repeatedly failing to act?”

He questioned the delay in arresting the main suspect in the Sohag murder case, suggesting that the authorities’ inaction raises concerns about silent support for the criminals. “The offenders cannot belong to any political party. The law must be equal for all,” he added.

Tarique, currently based in London, also instructed party members to remain vigilant. “The conspiracy is not over yet—it’s growing stronger. If I were in power, I would have taken strict measures to prevent such crimes,” he asserted.

Amid allegations of extortion and corruption involving BNP men, Tarique acknowledged the reports circulating in local media but shifted focus to what he called a larger conspiracy. He reiterated that BNP will not compromise with any individual involved in misdeeds.

Tarique also criticized the silence of rival parties over recent political killings, including that of a Jubo Dal leader in Khulna. He called upon BNP activists to “gather intelligence” on those acting against the country’s independence and sovereignty.

His remarks come as leaders from Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) have openly condemned alleged criminal activities by BNP activists.

Tarique made these comments while virtually addressing the families of 142 martyrs from the July mass uprising.
