BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has extended his warm greetings to members of the Hindu community on the eve of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival for Hindu devotees.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Tarique said Durga Puja in Bangladesh has long stood as a symbol of religious harmony and communal coexistence, celebrated peacefully with the cooperation of people of all faiths.

However, he alleged that in recent years, “beneficiaries of the past autocratic regime” attempted to disrupt this tradition by creating communal tensions for “narrow and dishonest political interests.”

He noted that although the regime has since fallen, conspiracies to undermine communal harmony continue, as evidenced by recent incidents.

Calling for utmost vigilance and preparedness, Tarique urged BNP leaders, activists, and its affiliated bodies to work in coordination with local communities to ensure that this year’s Durga Puja celebrations proceed peacefully.

“We respect the religious rights of every citizen of this country,” he said. “BNP is committed to preserving Bangladesh’s tradition of communal harmony, and we stand firm against any heinous attempt to destroy it.”
