Nazmul Haque Sani, Barishal Correspondent: BNP National Executive Committee member Abu Nasser Muhammad Rahmatullah has said that acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is firmly committed to giving due honour to the heroes of the July uprising.

He made the remarks on Saturday (August 9) at 4 PM while speaking as the chief guest at a reception and prayer gathering held in front of Barishal University. The event was organised by the university community and nearby residents to honour the “July Warriors” who made significant contributions during the historic student-people’s uprising in Barishal University and surrounding areas.

Rahmatullah stated that those students and citizens who gave their lives or shed blood for the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh must be honoured properly; otherwise, in the future, no one will risk their life for democracy.

“A state cannot develop without democracy. That is why Tarique Rahman is determined to honour all who contributed—whether through sacrifice of life, blood, or in other ways—to the historic student uprising of July 24. For 17 long years, he worked tirelessly to restore democracy, which culminated in the July uprising,” Rahmatullah said.

He criticised the interim government for failing over the past year to properly evaluate those killed, injured, or who made significant contributions during the uprising. He noted that no accurate or comprehensive list of such individuals has been prepared.

“Many injured July warriors are still living without treatment due to financial constraints, which is extremely tragic and condemnable. The interim government, despite having goodwill, lacked the experience needed to carry out this work, and under the influence of various groups and unethical pressures, they failed to accord proper respect to the July warriors,” Rahmatullah added.

The event was presided over by injured July warrior S. M. Rahmatullah Sardar. Among others present were Barishal Metropolitan BNP member Md. Zahidur Rahman Ripon; District Swechchhasebak Dal’s Joint Convener (No. 1) Anwar Hossain Titu; Metropolitan Swechchhasebak Dal Senior Joint Convener Tariq Sulaiman; former Convener of Char Kauwa Union BNP in Sadar Upazila Mamun Sardar Gani; District Chhatra Dal Vice President Asif Al Mamun; Elias Ahmed; Metropolitan Chhatra Dal Vice President Obaidul Haque Ujjal; Joint General Secretary Hajik Daian Ishti; former President of Barishal University Chhatra Dal Reza Sharif; BM College Chhatra Dal leader Akbar Mubeen; as well as local leaders and a large number of men and women who contributed to the July uprising.
