BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has described Tarique Rahman as the “torchbearer of democracy”.
He made the remarks on Saturday morning while addressing a BNP workshop titled “Plan to Build the Nation” at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in Farmgate.
Amir Khasru said the programme formed part of BNP’s broader vision and roadmap for rebuilding the country, as envisioned by BNP’s acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. “We are all delighted that on the 25th December, the most popular leader—whose return the nation has been eagerly awaiting—will come back to Bangladesh. Under his leadership, we have waged a long struggle in recent years to restore democracy and democratic order in the country,” he said.
Referring to Tarique Rahman as the leader who successfully united the nation during that movement, Amir Khasru added, “The hero of that struggle, the torchbearer of democracy, Tarique Rahman, will return to Bangladesh, Insha’Allah.”
Touching on the recent shooting of Inqilab Mancha leader Hadi, he said the incident was “deeply unfortunate”. “There was an attack on the Chattogram metropolitan president, and another incident occurred yesterday. At a time when stability is critically important—when BNP is offering a new political vision and a new political culture for Bangladesh—such incidents are alarming,” he said.
He said BNP leader Tarique Rahman has been pursuing a policy aimed at building a stable and peaceful Bangladesh, taking into account the psychological shift among the people following years of repression and the changes that emerged after 5 August.
“In contrast, we are witnessing another kind of politics—mobocracy, politics of force, politics of disrespect and humiliation of others, and politics that breeds instability on any pretext. This cannot be desirable for Bangladesh’s democracy,” he said.
Amir Khasru urged BNP leaders and activists to remain vigilant. “Our leader is returning on the 25th. From that day onwards, a new wave will emerge in Bangladesh’s democratic political arena, Insha’Allah. Everyone must be prepared for that day and for the upcoming election,” he said.
He said the forthcoming election would not be a victory for the BNP alone, but a victory for democracy itself. “BNP is the torchbearer of democracy, and we must uphold that responsibility,” he added.
Outlining the party’s future governance agenda, Amir Khasru said the benefits of democracy and economic growth must reach every citizen. “It is not enough to establish political democracy alone; economic democracy must also be ensured. Our work will begin from the very first day we come to power,” he said.
He added that BNP would prioritise investment in education and healthcare rather than so-called mega projects. “Sustainable development is not possible without meeting people’s basic needs,” he said.
The discussion was chaired by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP senior joint secretary general and convener of the implementation committee of the ‘Plan to Build the Nation’ programme, and moderated by joint secretary general Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel.
