BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday warned that the rise of mob justice poses a grave threat to humanity and democratic values in Bangladesh. In a statement marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, he said mob justice has become a dangerous new trend that undermines the foundation of a democratic society.
“We may have been freed from fascism, but true democratic practices have not yet begun,” he stated, adding, “Mob justice has emerged as an enemy of humanity, threatening the democratic culture we strive to build.”
Tarique criticised the previous Awami League government, accusing it of turning Bangladesh into a totalitarian state. He said civil liberties, including freedom of expression and press freedom, were severely curtailed during that time.
Referring to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment, he described it as politically motivated and condemned the government’s refusal to allow her proper medical treatment.
Tarique also pointed to global issues, noting that authoritarian regimes around the world continue to oppress citizens with impunity. He expressed solidarity with all victims of torture and oppression, both in Bangladesh and worldwide.
He concluded by calling for unity among democratic forces to preserve human rights, ensure justice, and uphold the rule of law.
