BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said that while his party has made several concessions to facilitate inclusive elections, there will be no compromise on issues that go against the public interest.

“Though we do not agree on everything, we have made concessions and accepted some matters so that the election process can move forward and all parties can participate,” he said. “But making concessions does not mean we will compromise on everything. There will be no compromise on matters that go against the public interest.”

He made the remarks while virtually addressing the triennial conference of the Patuakhali district BNP held at the district Gymnasium in the afternoon.

Tarique Rahman praised the legacy of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, highlighting his role in restoring multi-party democracy in Bangladesh during a time when political activities were banned under the BAKSAL regime. “Through Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, multi-party democracy was reintroduced in Bangladesh,” he said.

Addressing party leaders and activists, Tarique stressed the importance of staying aligned with public sentiment. “As workers of a nationalist party, our responsibility to the country and the people is greater. Stay with the people, keep the people with you,” he said. “The past fascist government did not fulfil the people’s expectations, which is why they fled.”

He also said that being the largest political party in Bangladesh brings additional responsibilities. “Those of you who are the eldest in your families know you carry more responsibilities. Younger siblings often get away with things. As the elder, you must make sacrifices,” he remarked.

Concluding his speech, Tarique said, “We will meet very soon on the soil of this country.”

BNP Vice-Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, former minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, and several other central leaders also spoke at the conference.
