Mahmudur Rahman Manna, President of Nagorik Oikya, has said that Tarique Rahman has now emerged as a far more transformed and capable leader than before.
“There is a significant difference between the Tarique Rahman of 15 years ago and the one we see today,” he said.
Manna made the remarks during a recent interview with a private television channel.
He said, “I listened to his (Tarique’s) speeches and observed him 15 years ago. Now, I find him to be much more mature and qualified. This change gives me hope. Some political quarters might claim I have an ulterior motive for saying this, but I have none. I left my previous party and formed a new one. Even when I had opportunities to join the ruling party, I did not.”
Speaking about Tarique Rahman’s transformation, Manna said, “He has become more humble, yet he can still take firm decisions—something necessary for the party. A leader should be like this: transparent in character, but capable of showing firmness when required.”
Regarding the BNP’s prospects, he said, “I am not a BNP member. However, BNP has a strong chance of winning. I want BNP to win 200 seats and leave the remaining 100 to other parties. This will help maintain democratic balance.”
Manna further said, “If we want to change Bangladesh, we must change ourselves too. There are many talented individuals in BNP. If Tarique Rahman becomes the party’s leader and later the prime minister, he must decide whether he will follow an autocratic path or adopt a collective leadership approach.”
