Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has asserted that the party supports both reform and elections, emphasizing that both are equally crucial. In response to ongoing political debates, Rahman pointed out that some individuals have attempted to create unnecessary confusion by raising questions about whether reform or elections should take priority. His remarks were shared on the official BNP social media account on Saturday, January 25.
Tarique Rahman highlighted the immediate concerns of the country’s citizens, stating that, while political reform and elections are important, the urgent need for many families is the ability to manage daily life. He noted that for millions of families, managing household expenses is currently more pressing than political discussions about elections or reforms.
He pointed to the soaring prices of essentials and the burdensome VAT imposed on the public, stressing that for farmers, workers, low-income individuals, and even lower-middle-class families, sustaining a livelihood has become increasingly difficult. He also noted that many families are silently suffering from this economic strain.
Rahman further elaborated on the pressing need for solutions to economic challenges, including how to reduce commodity prices, dismantle market cartels, and ensure essential goods remain affordable. He also stressed the importance of addressing the issue of false cases filed by what he termed the “fascist government,” ensuring greater protection for the public, and making the law enforcement agencies more active. Rahman emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of the people must be a top priority for any interim government.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that according to Tarique Rahman, these issues must take precedence as the country grapples with its current economic and political challenges.
