Acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman is set to meet Dr Muhammad Yunus in a highly anticipated closed-door meeting today in London. Scheduled for 9 AM local time at the Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane, the discussion comes amid rising political tension in Bangladesh.

The BNP views the meeting as a potential turning point in the country’s political landscape, as both sides seek to overcome mutual distrust. Central to the talks will be calls for rescheduling the next national election, currently facing opposition criticism for its proposed timing.

According to senior BNP leaders, the party is pushing for elections between November and January—arguing that holding them in March or April would interfere with school exams and the holy month of Ramadan.

The BNP has authorized Tarique Rahman to seek a concrete electoral roadmap by December. Sources indicate the meeting will also touch on judicial matters, political reforms, and the July Charter—an initiative advocating democratic progress.

Political analysts see this as an attempt to defuse a potential crisis and revive public trust in democratic institutions. Dr Yunus and Tarique Rahman are expected to use the meeting to find common ground for a neutral interim administration to oversee the upcoming election.

Although the meeting is one-on-one, senior BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has reportedly flown to London to provide behind-the-scenes support.

Speaking at a press briefing, BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi emphasized the importance of the dialogue, calling it “a crucial step for democratic reform and free, fair elections.”

Political analyst Badiul Alam Majumdar added, “We’re hopeful this meeting will pave the way for electoral progress. Issues must be resolved through dialogue—not street protests.”
