BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has warned that foreign imperialist forces are moving forward with a grand plan to impose cultural dominance in an attempt to dismantle the deep-rooted linguistic and cultural identity of Bangladesh. He called on the nation to remain vigilant against such influence.
In a message issued on Sunday ahead of Pahela Baishakh, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Tarique Rahman extended heartfelt greetings to Bangladeshis at home and abroad on the occasion of the Bengali New Year. He emphasized the need to be aware of the subtle threats posed by foreign dominance to the country’s cultural heritage.
Tarique Rahman described Pahela Baishakh as a vital element of the Bangladeshi national identity and an expression of deep-rooted tradition as well as pride. “The Bengali New Year is not merely a celebration but a reflection of our historical glory and the grandeur of our culture,” he stated.
He urged people to use the spirit of the New Year to move forward with new energy and unity. “Pahela Baishakh inspires us to march ahead with the light of the past guiding us. It’s a time to rejuvenate democracy through openness, pluralism, and the values ingrained in our national tradition.”
Reflecting on the past year’s struggles also challenges, he said, “As we step into the year 1432, we must leave behind exhaustion and despair. The world is plagued by conflict and bloodshed, but lasting peace can only come through selfless solutions, not vested interests.”
Calling for the cleansing of society from falsehood and injustice, he added, “Let the heat of Boishakh burn away lies, oppression, as well as unrest. May the winds of peace and prosperity flow across the nation.”
In a separate message, he extended greetings to all communities, including indigenous groups from the Chittagong Hill Tracts, recognizing their New Year festivals like Biju, Sangrai, Boisuk, Bihu, and others as integral to Bangladesh’s cultural mosaic. “The cultural, historical, and social traditions of the hill communities enrich our national heritage; bring glory and diversity to our identity,” he said.
He further affirmed BNP’s commitment to ensuring equal rights, development, and security for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or background, in accordance with the Constitution.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that, meanwhile, in a different statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed hope that this year’s Pahela Baishakh will be celebrated in a peaceful atmosphere. “Following the fall of the fascist regime, we hope this New Year brings a sense of relief and unity among people,” he said, adding that the celebration should be filled with mutual greetings besides harmony.
