The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start selling essential commodities through truck sales across all 64 districts from Wednesday, March 5, according to Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin. He has also directed officials to complete the distribution of smart cards to beneficiaries by March 17.
Speaking at a virtual meeting with district commissioners on Sunday regarding TCB product sales through smart cards, Bashir Uddin stated, “To support low-income groups, TCB’s truck sales will expand to all 64 districts starting Wednesday. Currently, the program is running in six districts, and the remaining 56 will be included on that day.”
The adviser emphasized the need for proper beneficiary selection, urging district commissioners to ensure that TCB’s products reach one crore marginal people. “By March 17, all eligible beneficiaries must receive their smart cards,” he instructed.
A total of 5.7 million beneficiaries will be able to purchase products using smart cards. Those who have been listed but have not yet received their smart cards will still be eligible. Additionally, TCB truck sales for the general public will begin in all 64 districts on February 5.
Advising district officials to curb stockpiling and price manipulation during Ramadan, Sheikh Bashir Uddin said, “Consumers should be encouraged to avoid bulk purchases for an entire month, as stockpiling by a few can lead to artificial shortages and price hikes.”
He warned that while the government seeks fairness, it will take strict action against any wrongdoing. “We aim to establish justice. No one will be oppressed, but those who engage in unfair practices will not be spared,” he stated, calling on district commissioners to take firm action against exploitation.
Highlighting the social justice aspect of TCB’s distribution system, the adviser stressed that selecting the right beneficiaries is crucial. “Ensuring this will enhance public trust in district administrators and increase their credibility and respect among the people,” he noted.
Currently, TCB operates 70 trucks—50 in Dhaka and 20 in Chattogram—for product distribution, with plans to expand during Ramadan.
The meeting was attended by Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Export) Md. Abdur Rahim Khan, TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad, as well as divisional commissioners and district commissioners from all 64 districts.
