Authorities have opened 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage as the river’s water level surged close to the danger mark following continuous rainfall and upstream runoff.

As of 9 AM on Sunday, the Teesta River’s water level at Dalia point was measured at 51.86 meters — just 30 centimeters below the official danger level of 52.15 meters — prompting the Water Development Board to release water through 44 barrage gates.

Though officials say there is no immediate threat of large-scale flooding, tension is rising among locals, particularly in the 76 vulnerable char areas of the region. Many of these low-lying zones are already at risk of submersion.

Anwar Hossain, a resident of Char Dowabari in Hatibandha upazila, shared his fear: “When floods come, everything is lost — crops, livestock, belongings. We are scared that it might happen again.”

Nurul Islam, a gauge reader at the Dalia Water Development Board, explained that the decision to open the barrage gates was made to manage the increasing water pressure caused by heavy upstream rainfall and runoff from the Himalayas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
