UPDATE : Police has baton charged, used sound grenades and tear shells to fully disperse the gathering and “March”.
The capital’s Purana Paltan area remained tense as thousands of Hizb ut-Tahrir supporters took to the streets after Jumu’ah prayers, defying police resistance. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowd, leading to multiple arrests.
Dhaka’s Purana Paltan area witnessed heightened tensions on Friday as the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir organized a “March for Khilafah” following Jumu’ah prayers. The demonstration, which began at the northern gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, saw thousands chanting slogans and advancing despite police intervention.
As law enforcement attempted to block their movement, the protesters pushed forward towards the Paltan intersection, forcing the police to fire two rounds of tear gas at Bijoynagar’s water pump intersection. Undeterred, the rally continued towards Paltan Maidan, prompting the police to launch three sound grenades.
By the time this report was filed, both sides remained in a standoff at Paltan Maidan. The demonstration was reportedly organized to mark the 101st anniversary of the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate.
