Tensions escalated ahead of a planned rally by BNP’s Rumin Farhana in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, as police recovered three unexploded cocktails from the rally site, sparking concerns of political unrest.
A scheduled rally by the Ashuganj Upazila Volunteer Party, with BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Barrister Rumin Farhana as the chief guest, has caused significant tension in the region. The rally, which was to take place at the Kadir Bhuiyan High School grounds, faced opposition from a rival faction of BNP supporters led by Shah Jahan Siraj, who announced a simultaneous rally at the same location.
The situation became more charged when, on Thursday morning (February 27), police discovered three unexploded cocktails behind the rally site. The discovery heightened tensions in the area, with local police immediately securing the devices and informing military personnel for further action. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the explosives were placed intentionally to create unrest during the rally.
Barrister Rumin Farhana, in a statement, condemned the incident, calling it an act of political malice. She claimed that the explosive devices were part of a concerted effort to disrupt her growing popularity and undermined the peaceful nature of her political activities. “These are acts of desperation by people who are unable to stay relevant in clean politics,” she added.
The rally, organized by the Ashuganj Upazila Volunteer Party to demand the implementation of a 31-point reform agenda, had been approved by the local administration after an official request from the senior joint convener, Rasel Biplab. However, a counter-request by the rival faction of the BNP came 10 days later, resulting in the tension surrounding the event.
In response, the police have heightened security measures in the area and have launched an investigation into the source and intent behind the explosive discovery. Ashuganj Police Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mostakim Patwari confirmed the seizure of the devices and assured that further actions would follow once military personnel arrive.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the incident highlights the growing rift within the BNP in Ashuganj, as two factions vie for control over political space and influence, adding further volatility to the region’s already fragile political landscape.
