Police have arrested three youths for allegedly harassing two madrasa students and assaulting a relative who protested the incident in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila.
Three men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday in connection with the harassment of two female madrasa students and the assault of a family member who intervened. The arrests took place in various locations across Balijhuri Union and the neighboring Bishwambharpur area.
The accused are Mehedi Hasan (25), son of Mohibur Rahman; Maruf Mia (21), son of Alomgir; and Tawshik Mia (22), son of Jahangir — all residents of Naya Hati village in Balijhuri Union.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 28, when five local youths intercepted the two girls as they were returning home from Balijhuri H A Ulum Alim Madrasa. The accused reportedly made vulgar gestures and passed obscene remarks. When the uncle of one of the girls arrived to confront them, he was attacked and severely injured by the group.
Fearing further harassment, both girls stopped attending madrasa. On April 29, the injured uncle filed a written complaint at Tahirpur Police Station, naming five individuals.
Tahirpur Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Delwar Hossain confirmed the arrests and stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining two suspects, identified as Himel and Rocky. The three detainees will be produced in court and sent to jail following legal procedures.
