Three illegal brick kilns demolished in Lakshmipur

Ehsan Riaz, Lakshmipur: Authorities in Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur demolished three illegal brick kilns and imposed fines totaling Tk 8 lakh during a daylong drive on Monday (April 28).

The mobile court, led by Ramgati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Syed Amzad Hossain and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jhantu Bikash Chakma, conducted the operation in the Char Afzal area of Char Ramiz Union.

During the drive, chimneys, kilns, and large stocks of raw bricks at the sites were destroyed, and the operations of the brickfields were completely shut down.

The demolished kilns were: Messrs Amanat Bricks owned by Md. Noman, Messrs JS Bricks owned by Md. Sarwar, and Messrs Chowdhury Bricks owned by Md. Alauddin.

The kiln owners were found guilty of operating without necessary environmental clearance and were fined a total of Tk 8 lakh, which was collected on the spot.

The drive was carried out with support from the Department of Environment (DoE) Lakshmipur, Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Police, and the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Speaking to the media, UNO Syed Amzad Hossain said, “Since these brick kilns were operating illegally without environmental permits, they have been demolished, and fines have been imposed. Similar drives will continue in the public interest.”

Notably, during a similar drive on Saturday (April 26), four other illegal brick kilns in the same area were also demolished. Fines amounting to Tk 10.5 lakh were imposed and realized from the owners of Messrs Four Star Bricks, Messrs Bismillah Bricks, Messrs Shahjalal Bricks, and Messrs Shahporan Bricks.
