A sudden earthquake early Friday morning (November 21) claimed three lives in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area when part of a building’s sunshade collapsed.
The incident occurred in the Koshaituli locality of Armanitola during the tremor. Two people died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, said Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Lalbagh division.
Khaleda Yasmin, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, reported that parts of a building were damaged in Koshaituli. Partial collapses were also reported in buildings in Kalabagan and Sutrapur areas. Fire Service personnel are working at the affected sites, while further details are yet to be confirmed.
The earthquake struck at 10:38am, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation and Research Centre. Radio Mechanic Iqbal Ahmed said the epicentre was in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, 13km east of the Agargaon Meteorological Office, with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
