Three law enforcement officials have faced disciplinary action over alleged negligence in the departure of former President Md. Abdul Hamid from Bangladesh.
The Police Headquarters on Thursday confirmed that an Additional Superintendent of Police from the Immigration Department has been withdrawn from duty following Abdul Hamid’s recent exit from the country. Additionally, the investigating officer of a case filed against Hamid at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station and a Special Branch (SB) officer have both been temporarily suspended.
Former President Abdul Hamid left the country on Wednesday night, nine months after the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government amid intense student-led protests. Until now, Hamid had remained in the country, unlike many Awami League leaders who reportedly fled earlier.
Airport sources revealed that Hamid, accompanied by his son Riad Ahmed and brother-in-law Dr. A.M. Naushad, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11 PM. After completing immigration formalities without any reported objections from law enforcement agencies, they boarded Thai Airways flight TG 340 at 3:05 AM en route to Bangkok.
Hamid, who served as President of Bangladesh from 2013 to 2023 under the Awami League regime, previously held the position of Speaker of Parliament from 2009 to April 2013.
The incident has raised questions over lapses in monitoring individuals facing legal or political scrutiny, especially in the post-regime transition period.
