Tigers need more clarity in ODIs: Salahuddin

Bangladesh senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin believes that the Tigers need greater clarity and consistency in their approach to One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

In recent times, Bangladesh has made progress in Tests and T20Is compared to ODIs, which, ironically, was once considered our strongest format.

“I can’t give you exact figures, but I think we now have a fairly settled Test side. The players have been playing together for a long time. There’s a clear understanding of who will bat, who will bowl, and who will lead the pace attack. There’s continuity — not too many changes — and I don’t think that will change much either,” he explained.

“We’re in a rhythm where everyone more or less knows their role. T20Is have also reached a similar level of consistency — we’re building a stable structure there as well. But with ODIs, things still need a bit of calculation. There are several factors to consider. The format tends to rely more on experienced players.”

Salahuddin pointed out that Bangladesh’s ODI middle order — once anchored by veterans like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah — is currently unsettled.

“We haven’t been able to establish any firm replacements in those positions yet. What makes it harder is that many of the players now featuring in the middle order don’t regularly bat in those positions in domestic cricket either,” he said.

“In one-day cricket, you often need to shift roles quickly. If wickets fall, you have to play one way; if they don’t, you play another. Your role changes after 10 overs, then again after 30. The demands are constantly shifting, so adaptability is key — and that’s where experience matters,” he explained.

“I believe once the boys get used to reading situations and adjusting accordingly, our ODI performances will improve. Even though we often claim that ODIs are our strength, the truth is we’re still trying to find our footing — especially in the middle order at positions four, five, and six.”

“These positions are vital. They require strike rotation and tactical awareness depending on the game’s demands. For years, we had a settled setup there, and that stability is now gone. The new players need time to grow into those roles.”

Salahuddin concluded: “In T20Is and Tests, we’re seeing consistent performances because players know their roles and responsibilities. Once we develop the same level of clarity in ODIs, I believe things will become much easier for us.”
