The students of Government Titumir College have decided to withdraw their ongoing protest following a government assurance that visible steps will be taken within seven days to convert the college into an independent university.

The announcement was made on Monday night (February 3) during a meeting attended by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Md. Nuruzzaman, and the college’s principal, Professor Dr. Shipra Rani Mondal. In a symbolic gesture, teachers offered juice to the fasting students, marking the end of their hunger strike.

After the meeting, the students stated, “The government has assured us that concrete steps will be taken within seven days regarding the transition of Government Titumir College into a separate university. Based on this commitment, we have decided to withdraw our hunger strike, blockade, and all protest programs.”

However, the students also raised concerns about their academic disruptions due to the protest. “Many of us participated in the movement today, missing out on studies. Meanwhile, a final exam for one of the Honours batches under the Seven College system is scheduled for tomorrow. We have requested the authorities to postpone it,” they added.

Liberty News’ national affairs correspondent states that the principal informed the students that postponing the exam was beyond her jurisdiction, but she assured them that the request would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration.
