A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mazharul Islam and his wife Laila Khan over allegations of corruption. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Monday following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), court sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The ACC’s Assistant Director Bishan Ghosh filed the application, stating that the couple is under investigation for corruption and illegal accumulation of wealth. The petition also alleged that Mazharul deposited large sums of money into his wife’s bank account and that they were attempting to flee the country, which could hinder the investigation.

Mazharul, a former general secretary of the Bangladesh Police Service Association, was arrested on September 19, 2024, from the APBn Specialized Training Centre in Khagrachhari. He was later placed on a five-day remand in connection with the death of 17-year-old Mohammad Arif during the quota reform movement in Jatrabari on July 19.

Liberty News’ city correspondent reports that Mazharul, also a former OC of Gulshan police station, has been implicated in multiple cases, including an ICT case related to the killing of college student Imam Hasan Taim during the mass uprising.
