The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has initiated the process of investigating the Awami League (AL) as a political organisation for alleged crimes against humanity, Chief Prosecutor Tazul Islam announced on Sunday.
Speaking at a briefing at the tribunal in Dhaka, Tazul Islam confirmed that several complaints had been lodged seeking trial of the Awami League as a party, including one submitted by National Democratic Movement (NDM) Chairman Bobby Hajjaj.
“In light of these complaints, we are beginning an investigation,” he said. “It can therefore be said that we are in the preliminary stages of initiating a probe to determine whether the Awami League, as an organisation, can be held accountable for crimes against humanity.”
The chief prosecutor noted that once the investigation proceeds in full swing, the tribunal would be able to assess how far the matter can advance under existing legal provisions.
The announcement marks a significant development, as it is the first time that the ruling party is facing the prospect of an institutional investigation by the ICT — a body originally formed to try individuals accused of atrocities committed during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
