Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, as part of what he described as a “full and complete trade deal” between the two nations.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that South Korea has agreed to invest $350 billion in the U.S., along with a $100 billion purchase of liquefied natural gas or other energy products.
The announced 15% tariff is lower than the 25% rate Trump had previously threatened and aligns more closely with rates applied to Japan and the European Union.
Trump also said South Korea would make an additional “large sum” investment, with further details to be revealed during an upcoming visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to the White House.
He congratulated Lee on his “electoral success” ahead of the planned bilateral meeting.
