U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan to detain thousands of undocumented immigrants, labeled as ‘illegal aliens,’ at the infamous Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, sparking widespread debate.

In a shocking announcement on Wednesday, President Donald Trump revealed plans to send thousands of refugees to a detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The new executive order, which Trump said he plans to sign, will allow for the construction of a refugee camp at the facility, specifically to house around 30,000 refugees.

Trump stated that the refugees sent to Guantanamo Bay would primarily include individuals considered dangerous, whose presence in the U.S. poses a threat to American citizens. He emphasized that some of these individuals are so dangerous that they cannot be safely deported to their home countries, as there is no assurance they won’t return to the U.S.

This move comes in line with Trump’s previous statements during his 2024 campaign, where he vowed to take strong action against refugees and migrants and to enhance border security. Upon taking office, Trump has continued to pursue a series of contentious measures, with this latest plan garnering international attention.

The idea of detaining refugees at Guantanamo Bay, a facility notorious for holding terrorism suspects without trial, has raised alarm globally. During his presidency, former President Joe Biden had also deported numerous refugees but did not resort to military aircraft and handcuffs as seen in the recent actions under Trump’s administration, a tactic that has sparked fierce debate and criticism.

Experts predict that this latest decision by Trump will ignite further global controversy. Defending his plan, Trump reiterated, “Those being considered for Guantanamo Bay are severe criminals, and if deported to another country, we cannot guarantee they won’t return to America. Hence, Guantanamo Bay is the only viable option.”

Liberty News’ international correspondent reports The Guantanamo Bay detention center, established after the 9/11 attacks to hold suspected terrorists, has long been a focal point of human rights concerns. Reports of unlawful detention and abuse within the facility have fueled continued debates on its legitimacy and moral implications.
