US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all countries, stating that the new trade policy will take effect from April 2. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump made it clear that no nation will be exempt.
Trump explained that the tariffs would apply to any country that imposes import duties on American goods or has a trade deficit with the United States. “This is not limited to a few nations. We are imposing tariffs on every country,” he declared.
Previously, it was speculated that Trump’s tariff policy would target only major economies with significant trade imbalances with the U.S. However, his latest announcement dismisses that assumption. “I haven’t heard any rumors about exempting 10 or 15 countries. Every country is included—no exceptions,” he stated.
US trade adviser Peter Navarro estimated that the global tariffs could generate $600 billion in annual revenue, totaling $6 trillion over the next decade.
Earlier this month, economic adviser Kevin Hassett had indicated that only 10–15 countries responsible for the US trade deficit would face tariffs. However, Trump’s sweeping declaration on Sunday renders that strategy obsolete.
