Former US President Donald Trump visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the UAE on Thursday, prompting authorities to close it to the public for the day, marking his first visit to a mosque during or after his presidency.

On May 15, former US President Donald Trump toured the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, accompanied by Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan. The mosque, renowned for its white domes and intricate Italian marble floral designs, remained closed to worshippers throughout the day to ensure a secure and exclusive visit.

Trump entered the mosque barefoot, following local customs. Impressed by the architecture, he remarked, “Isn’t it beautiful? Stunning.” He further noted, “They closed the mosque for the first time just for me. That’s a great honor—not just for me but for the entire United States.”

This visit came as part of Trump’s Middle East tour, which included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. His relationship with the UAE gained significance in 2020 when the country normalized ties with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, a move Trump championed.

Notably, Trump’s views on Muslims have shifted over the years. In 2016, he criticized then-President Barack Obama for visiting a mosque in Baltimore. However, during a recent Ramadan iftar, Trump acknowledged support from the Muslim community, promising to stand by them.

Historically, US presidents rarely visit mosques. Dwight Eisenhower inaugurated the Washington, DC mosque in 1957, while George W. Bush spoke there post-9/11 in 2001.
