Tsunami alert prompted after 6.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan

A strong earthquake struck Japan on Monday. The earthquake measured 6.9 on the richter scale. The earthquake was felt in the Kyushu region of southern Japan at 9:19 pm local time on Monday.

AFP reported this news from Tokyo today. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that a strong earthquake of 6.9 magnitude shook the Kyushu region on Monday. However, there were no immediate reports of major damage from the earthquake.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the southern prefectures of Miyazaki and Kochi after the earthquake. Japan’s meteorological agency Xe said that authorities have advised locals not to go to the sea or to the coast until the tsunami warning is lifted.

According to a report by Japanese state media NHK, waves of 20 centimeters high have already been recorded in the city of Miyazaki. The provincial capital is home to about 400,000 people. There were no reports of damage to the Ikata Nuclear Power Plant in western Japan after the quake, the report said.

Liberty News observed that two power plants are operating in the area near the quake site. However, both remain operational at the time of publishing this report.
