The Bangladesh Army surrounded Tungipara Police Station overnight with armored vehicles to ensure security after an attack on police officers who had detained a suspect believed to be linked to the Awami League and Chhatra League. Army personnel remained stationed in front of the police station from 9:30 PM on Sunday until 8:30 AM on Monday.

The incident occurred around 7 PM on Sunday near Khan Saheb Sheikh Mosharraf Hossain School and College following the arrest of an individual.

According to Tungipara police, all the attackers were local Awami League supporters. Five police officers were injured in the attack, and one person was detained.

Police and local sources reported that Awami League and Chhatra League activists were distributing leaflets for an Awami League-organized program near the school. Upon receiving this information, the police arrived at the scene and attempted to stop the distribution. A verbal altercation ensued, and as tensions escalated, police arrested local resident Safayet Gazi on charges of obstructing police duties.

At that moment, locals intercepted the police vehicle, vandalized it, and attacked the officers, briefly detaining one of them. Additional police personnel arrived but also faced resistance. The Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) later arrived at the scene and helped rescue the trapped police officer.

The situation in the area remains tense. In response, the army has maintained an overnight presence with several armored vehicles, and additional police and law enforcement personnel have been deployed around Tungipara Police Station.

Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khorshed Alam told Liberty News, “For the security of our station and officers, the army has taken position around the police station with armored vehicles. Five police personnel were injured in the attack, and legal actions against the perpetrators are ongoing.”

Tungipara Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Moinul Haque told Liberty News, “Upon receiving reports of police vehicle vandalism and an officer being held hostage, I rushed to the scene. I calmed the agitated crowd and secured the officer’s release, handing him over to the OC. The situation is now under control.”
