Former International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Barrister Turin Afroz has been shown arrested in connection with the murder of student Anwar Hossain Patwary during the July Students Against discrimination uprising in Dhaka.
A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Judge Mehedi Hasan, granted the CID’s petition to officially show Barrister Turin Afroz as arrested in the case following a hearing on Monday. She was present in court during the proceedings and appeared visibly calm and smiling from the dock.
Earlier, CID Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarkar, the investigation officer, filed the petition to have her arrest officially recorded in the case. The court had scheduled the hearing upon taking the application into cognizance.
According to the case details, Anwar Hossain Patwary was fatally shot on August 5 last year during mass protests against what demonstrators labeled as a fascist regime under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. His father, Al Amin Patwary, later filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station.
Turin Afroz had previously been removed from her position as a prosecutor in 2019 after allegations of holding a secret meeting with Muhammad Wahidul Haque, a former NSI and Passport Directorate chief, who was facing war crimes charges.
She was arrested earlier on April 7 this year from a residence in Uttara and subsequently placed on a four-day remand in connection with an attempted murder case of student Abdul Jabbar. After the remand, she was sent to jail on April 12.
