DMP’s DB has arrested two individuals for attempting to make illegal profits by selling 10,000 free government textbooks in the open market. On Thursday, DMP Joint Commissioner Md Nasrul Hamid told a press briefing that Sirajul Islam alias Uzzal, 55, and Md Delowar Hossain, 56, were arrested from the Banglabazar area in Old Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

In preliminary interrogation, the arrestees have confessed to working for thwarting government’s textbook distribution activities and for making illegal financial gains, police said.

On a tip-off, the DB unit in Kotwali area launched a combing operation in the Ispahani street of Banglabazar on Wednesday afternoon.

The arrests have been made amid widespread concerns that delays in distributing free textbooks are hampering the educational activities of school children at the start of the New Year. The interim government has noticeably fallen behind schedule to deliver the free books among children due to last year’s political disruptions, and current printing sector crisis.

While around two-thirds of the primary school students have received the books, the secondary school students are still struggling due to book shortage.

And yet, the government is moving ahead to supply all the books by March by helping private printing companies overcome their crises.

In this backdrop, Liberty News has observed some vested actors are actively conspiring to further jeopardise the government’s book distribution activities.
