Two brothers were killed and their parents injured in a mob beating in the Ghorashal area of Palash upazila, Narsingdi, on Monday night. The victims were identified as Rakib (25) and Sakib (20), while their injured parents, Ashraf Uddin (50) and Rabeya Khatun (45), are currently undergoing treatment.

According to police and local sources, on Monday morning, locals caught and assaulted a young man named Himel (23) on suspicion of attempting to steal an auto-rickshaw battery. He was later released.

Later in the afternoon, Rakib and Sakib confronted the auto-rickshaw drivers in defense of Himel, leading to an argument. That evening, when the two brothers returned to the same area, another altercation broke out, during which locals and auto-rickshaw drivers allegedly detained and assaulted them.

Upon hearing about the incident, their parents rushed to the scene to rescue them but were also attacked. The injured family members were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Sakib dead. Rakib was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Hajera Begum, the victims’ aunt, claimed, “A group of local criminals had been demanding extortion money from us for a long time. Since we refused to pay, they planned and carried out the attack on Rakib and Sakib on Eid day.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monir Hossain said, “A young man was beaten up in the morning on suspicion of theft. It is believed that, in an attempt to retaliate, the two brothers confronted the locals in the evening, which led to the mob beating. The case is under investigation, but we have not found any evidence of extortion claims yet.”

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. No case has been filed yet, but police have launched an investigation into the incident.
