A magnitude 7.7 and 6.4 earthquakes have struck Myanmar, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), with reports of strong tremors felt in Thailand and elsewhere in the region, including Bangladesh.
Citing USGS, Al Jazeera said the first tremor hit 16 kilometres (10 miles) northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 kilometres at about 12:50 pm local time (06:20 GMT). In Bangladesh, the quake was felt at 12:21pm on Friday.
Confirming the matter, Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s (BMD) Seismic Observatory and Research Centre Official in Charge Md Rubaiyat Kabir told the Daily Samakal that the origin of the quake was 597km away from Dhaka.
Liberty News’ international correspondent reports that the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said the jolt measured magnitude 7.9, according to the Xinhua news agency, with a social media post by CENC saying “tremors were felt in Yunnan”.
Strong tremors extended into Thailand and Yunnan in south-west China, with videos on social media showing damage to buildings in Bangkok, BBC reports. There are reports of roads buckling in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw.
