British Trade Secretary and President of the Board of Trade Jonathan Reynolds has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s support for Bangladesh’s interim government’s initiative to recover illicit funds laundered abroad.

During a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the British Parliament on Wednesday, Reynolds welcomed the government’s ongoing reform measures and its actions to bring back the stolen assets.

Both sides discussed strengthening bilateral trade relations and expanding investment opportunities between the two friendly nations. The conversation also covered mutual interests, trade growth strategies, and ways to boost British investments in Bangladesh.

Professor Yunus highlighted the government’s economic recovery efforts, including reforms in the banking sector, stabilising foreign currency reserves, and ensuring overall macroeconomic stability.

Present at the meeting were Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Dr. Khallilur Rahman, Special Envoy to the Chief Adviser Lutfey Siddiqi, and Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed.

Lutfey Siddiqi proposed initiating a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the UK and Bangladesh. He mentioned that Dhaka has already begun FTA discussions with several countries, including Japan.

The meeting also included Baroness Rosie Winterton, the UK’s Trade Envoy to Bangladesh, and British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke.
