Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that the interim government has hired legal teams to recover funds allegedly stolen and laundered to the United Kingdom during previous administrations, receiving strong support from the British authorities.

In an interview with the BBC during his visit to the UK, Yunus praised the British government’s swift response, noting their cooperation in efforts to trace and recover the assets.

The BBC reported that the International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre (IACCC), based in London and hosted by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), is considering ways to assist Bangladesh in investigating corruption allegations linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

Bangladeshi authorities claim approximately $234 billion (£174 billion) was illicitly taken from the country, much of it believed to be moved or spent in the UK.

While the NCA declined to comment on ongoing investigations, the developments indicate growing collaboration between the two nations on tackling cross-border financial crimes.

During his visit, Yunus met with King Charles and UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, though he was unable to secure a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He described the missed opportunity as unfortunate but expressed hope for stronger ties in the future.

Yunus returned to Dhaka on 14 June after his four-day UK visit.
