The United Kingdom could announce its recognition of Palestine as a state later today (Sunday, 21 September), with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government expected to make the declaration in the afternoon.

Back in July, the prime minister had stated clearly that if Israel failed to agree to a ceasefire and commit to a permanent peace agreement based on a two-state solution by September, Britain would reconsider its position. Analysts believe this earlier stance largely influenced the upcoming decision.

Experts say the move would mark a significant shift in Britain’s foreign policy. Successive UK governments have long maintained that recognition of Palestine should only come when it would meaningfully contribute to the peace process.

The decision, however, has drawn criticism. The Israeli government, families of hostages, and several Conservative leaders have opposed the step. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier warned that granting such recognition would mean “rewarding terrorism.”

British ministers, on the other hand, argue that the move stems from a moral responsibility to keep hopes of peace alive. Government sources said the worsening situation in Gaza in recent weeks—marked by hunger and violence, which the prime minister had previously described as “intolerable”—compelled the UK to take this step.

Not only the UK but also France, Canada, Australia, Portugal, and Luxembourg have already announced plans to recognize Palestine as a state and are preparing for the move.
