Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has announced that two Russian agents were killed after the assassination of a senior Ukrainian intelligence officer in Kyiv last week.
SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk stated in a video briefing on Sunday that the suspects were agents of Russia’s FSB and were “liquidated” during a special operation after resisting arrest.
The development follows the killing of Colonel Ivan Voronych, who was shot multiple times in broad daylight on July 10 in a parking area in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. CCTV footage verified by Reuters showed a man approaching Voronych before opening fire and fleeing the scene.
Authorities say the suspects had tracked Voronych’s movements and located a hidden pistol with a silencer before the attack. After the killing, the pair went into hiding, but were traced in a joint investigation by the SBU and national police.
While Ukraine’s police confirmed the deceased were foreign nationals, they did not release further identities. Moscow has yet to respond to the claims.
The SBU, Ukraine’s main domestic security agency, has been involved in high-profile operations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. Though Kyiv has never officially confirmed such missions, Ukrainian intelligence is believed to have been behind several assassinations of top Russian military figures, including Gen Igor Kirillov and Gen Yaroslav Moskalik.
This incident comes amid intensified Russian aerial attacks and mounting casualties. June recorded the highest civilian death toll in three years, according to the UN. Fighting on the frontlines also continues, with Russia slowly advancing in eastern Ukraine and regaining lost ground in its Kursk region.
Peace talks remain stalled as the war enters its fourth year.
