Ukraine has recovered the bodies of 1,212 soldiers killed in the ongoing war with Russia, according to Kyiv’s prisoner exchange coordination committee. The handover followed recent talks between the two countries, which also saw Russia receiving 27 bodies of its fallen troops.
Photos released by Ukrainian authorities showed refrigerated trucks and personnel from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at an undisclosed handover point. Some trucks bore the insignia of “On the Shield,” a Ukrainian group involved in retrieving war dead.
Though a large-scale exchange had been agreed upon, the process was delayed amid disputes over timing and coordination. Ukrainian officials accused Russia of acting unilaterally, while Moscow said Ukraine postponed receiving the bodies.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier stated that Russia had offered to return up to 6,000 bodies, but only a small fraction had been identified so far. Ukrainian experts will now begin the identification process for the 1,212 remains.
This development comes amid renewed prisoner swaps, with both sides recently exchanging young and severely wounded prisoners. Further exchanges are planned as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine.
