UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern following India’s overnight missile attacks on Pakistani territory, calling on both nations to exercise maximum restraint.
In response to escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, the United Nations has issued a stern appeal for calm. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, speaking on behalf of Secretary-General António Guterres, released a statement late Tuesday expressing alarm over India’s missile strikes targeting several regions in Pakistan, including Kotli, Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, and Muzaffarabad.
“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by India’s military operations along the Line of Control and across the international border,” the statement read. “He urges both sides to demonstrate maximum military restraint and avoid any further escalation that could endanger regional stability.”
The UN stressed that the world cannot afford another large-scale military conflict, especially between two nuclear-armed nations. The appeal comes as Pakistani military officials claimed to have shot down multiple Indian fighter jets in retaliation, raising fears of a full-scale confrontation.
This latest wave of violence follows an April 22 militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people—an incident that further inflamed long-standing hostilities between the two neighbors.
Guterres’ call adds to growing international pressure urging dialogue over warfare in a region already burdened by decades of conflict.
