United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to arrive in Bangladesh today for a four-day visit, marking his second trip to Dhaka in a decade over the Rohingya crisis. During his stay, he will visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and join a grand Iftar gathering with a hundred thousand Rohingya in honor of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The announcement was made at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar. Senior Assistant Press Secretary Fayez Ahmed and Assistant Press Secretary Suchismita Tithi were also present.

Shafiqul Alam stated that the UN Secretary-General’s visit comes at a critical time when food aid for Rohingya refugees has declined. “We hope this visit will bring renewed global attention to the Rohingya crisis,” he added.

Azad Mazumdar mentioned that Guterres will hold a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus before they travel together to Cox’s Bazar on a Bangladesh Airlines flight. On Friday, the UN chief will spend the day engaging in various programs within the Rohingya camps. In the evening, he will attend an Iftar gathering, where one lakh Rohingya refugees will break their fast in honor of Professor Yunus.

Officials believe this visit will pave the way for further discussions on financial aid and long-term solutions to the Rohingya issue.
