The United Nations Security Council has called on India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and pursue dialogue following fears of imminent military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

In a closed-door session held Monday night (local time), the UN Security Council urged both India and Pakistan to engage in diplomatic dialogue to prevent further deterioration of regional stability. The appeal follows Islamabad’s warning of a potential Indian attack, based on intelligence reports shared with Council members.

A statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for restraint and peaceful resolution through bilateral negotiations. “Dialogue and diplomatic efforts are essential to avoid military confrontation and reduce tensions,” the statement read.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who addressed the meeting, echoed these concerns. “Any military conflict must be avoided. Now is the time for maximum restraint,” he stated.

The call for calm comes in the wake of a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam area on April 22, where unidentified gunmen killed at least 26 people. India has accused Pakistan of being behind the assault, claiming two of the three suspects were Pakistani nationals. Pakistan has denied the allegations and expressed willingness to support an independent and transparent investigation.

In retaliation for the attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, revoked visas for Pakistani citizens, and severed all diplomatic communication. Islamabad responded by closing its airspace to Indian aircraft, banning Indian citizens—except Sikh pilgrims—from entering Pakistan, and threatening to withdraw from the Simla Peace Accord.

As regional hostilities grow, the UN continues to stress the importance of diplomacy to avert a full-blown crisis in South Asia.
