Tom Fletcher, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Emergency Relief, voiced the alarming concern during an interview with BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday. He cautioned that without immediate large-scale humanitarian aid, thousands of children in Gaza may perish from starvation within 48 hours.

Fletcher emphasized that the blockade has left Gaza’s population—especially children—on the brink of catastrophe. “Unless food reaches the most vulnerable now, we are facing the death of 14,000 children in just two days,” he warned.

On Monday, Israel allowed a limited number of aid trucks to enter Gaza for the first time in nearly two and a half months, following intense international pressure. However, only five trucks were permitted to cross into the enclave—home to over two million people.

“These trucks contained food and nutritional supplies for children, but the aid has yet to reach the wider population,” Fletcher stated. He described the delivery as “a drop in the ocean” compared to the desperate need on the ground.

Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly urged for unrestricted access to Gaza to prevent what they call an impending famine. Fletcher reiterated that current efforts are grossly insufficient and called for a sustained and large-scale humanitarian corridor to avert further loss of life.
