Despite heatwaves sweeping across several regions of Bangladesh, Panchagarh remains enveloped in a winter-like chill, with dense fog covering parts of the district early in the morning.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, mild to moderate heatwaves are affecting Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Saidpur, and Chuadanga, with temperatures ranging between 36°C and 39°C. However, the northern district of Panchagarh is experiencing an unusual contrast, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 17°C, creating a winter-like atmosphere.
On Wednesday (April 2) at 6 AM, Panchagarh recorded a temperature of 16.8°C. Thick fog blanketed various areas, particularly in Tetulia and its surrounding villages, limiting visibility and giving the region an early winter feel. Locals reported that despite sunny days, cold winds blowing from the Himalayas are keeping the temperature low, making it necessary for some residents to use blankets at night.
Jitendranath, an official from the Tetulia Meteorological Observation Center, attributed the phenomenon to cloudy skies and fog accumulation, which have led to cooler temperatures. He suggested that climate change might be playing a role in this unusual weather pattern. The sudden temperature drop has also led to an increase in cold-related illnesses, particularly among children and the elderly.
