Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher has said that unresolved issues between Bangladesh and Pakistan are matters to be addressed by the two governments.
He made the remark after meeting Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who is currently visiting Dhaka.
The meeting took place on Saturday afternoon at the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka, where Jamaat leaders, led by Taher, held talks with the visiting minister.
The discussions also touched on Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Taher said the talks focused on mutual interests, regional trade, and ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
“We discussed how to further enhance relations with a brotherly Muslim country and how to make the regional alliance SAARC more active and stronger,” he said.
When asked about overcoming nearly 15 years of strained relations, Taher said that Bangladesh’s foreign policy had been “somewhat one-sided” in recent years.
“Now the government of Bangladesh — and all of us — believe we should maintain good relations with every neighbouring country in the region. Both sides emphasised this point,” he added.
Taher further said that Pakistan’s deputy prime minister is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with the Bangladesh government tomorrow.
“Unresolved issues in bilateral relations need to be resolved quickly in a favourable environment,” he said.
When asked whether issues from 1971 were raised during the meeting, Taher said, “These are matters for the governments of both countries to discuss. We hope the government will address them.”
On whether the national election was discussed, he said it came up only in passing and was not a major topic.
Taher also said they spoke with Ishaq Dar about unity among Muslim countries in the face of ongoing aggression against Muslims worldwide, and about standing together for justice and humanity.
